Product Description
azalea
Azalea seeds require no pre-germination treatment, such as stratification or scarification. The germination container can be anything you have around the house, as long as it has holes in the bottom for drainage. Fill the container with milled sphagnum peat moss that you’ve pre-moistened. This gives the seeds a well-drained medium, which helps prevent rotting.
Germination
It is important not to bury azalea seeds, as they require light to germinate. Lay them on top of the peat moss and lightly press down on them to ensure contact with the moss. The seeds also require a somewhat steady humidity level so slip the container into a plastic bag and secure it. This creates a mini-greenhouse effect. Finally, since rhododendron seeds need lots of light to germinate, place the bagged container about 12 inches below grow lights. You may also have success when placing the container on a sunny windowsil.
Post Germination
Azalea seeds germinated properly should sprout within three to four weeks but don’t give up on them too early – some may take longer, depending on conditions. Remove the container from the bag as soon as the seeds sprout, but allow it to remain under the lights. Seedlings tend to grow rather slowly during the early stages after germination and require consistent moisture and good air circulation. You can provide additional air circulation by placing a fan near them. Direct the air to blow over the top of the plants. Transplant the rhododendron seedlings into a potting mix labeled for azaleas, eight to 10 weeks after they sprout.
Watering: Azalea Bonsai trees must not dry out but they also don't like permanent wetness. Azaleas need a slightly acid soil and hard tap water is not appropriate for them.
Germination time: 20-30 days
