Mangosteen is a plant used to make medicine. The fruit rind is most commonly used, but other parts of the plant, like the seeds, leaves, and bark, are also used.

Mangosteen is taken by mouth for weight loss and applied to the gums for serious gum disease. Some people take mangosteen for diarrhea and infections or apply mangosteen to the skin for eczema and other skin conditions. But there is no good scientific research to support these other uses.

Fresh mangosteen may be difficult to come by, as it’s a relatively obscure fruit. But canned, frozen, and supplemental forms are more common.
