After 107 years, Marco Kartodikromo 's first novel or "surat tjerita" titled "mata daram" was reissued in full versions. A work of the most brilliant javanese anti-colonial and nationalist activists of the early XX century which seldom received attention from critics and academics. Dubbed wild reading by the dutch colonials, the novel tells the story of four young men who are flogged by romance among the symptoms of turbulent modernity.
