Product Description

1 Liter Bucket = about 0.75 Kilograms (Gross Weight) Available in 3 (Small, Medium, Large) Grain Sizes - Please see photos Akadama is a naturally occurring, clay-like soil that is found mainly in Japan. The term Akadama is Japanese for the words “red” - the color of the particles - and “ball” - the shape of the particles. These particles are balls of volcanic clay that have been mined and naturally dried or baked to the desired hardness. The dried particles are then sifted and bagged depending on the grain size. The biggest advantage to using Akadama is that it has porosity, or the ability to hold water and store it in microscopic pores and cavities for a longer period of time. This ability to retain water and nutrients is crucial for any type of plant life and is even more so for a bonsai species. This type of soil also has the benefit of being a free-draining type, meaning that it is easy for Akadama to drain unnecessary water given enough time. Yet another advantage to using this soil would be in the color of Akadama, which can darken when moisten, thereby helping the caretaker to know when to water the plant.  Please note that after about two years, Akadama does start to break down which reduces aeration. This means that regular repotting is required, or that Akadama should be used in a mix with well-draining soil components. We use high-quality brands that makes hard grains that do not easily break down. Good for water and nutrient retention. Provides excellent root aeration and drainage. Beautiful as a soil topper for your plant collection. Good medium if you want to root cactus pups. (Bag Method) Can be used as an additive for your soil mix for Bonsai, Succulents (Cactus, Haworthia, etc.), and other plants. Color changing ability is a good visual indication of its wetness or dryness. We use a protective, multi-purpose, and tight seal 1 Liter clear bucket with a carry handle for easy storage and transport.  Be cautious about the dust that naturally comes from the Akadama. Please seal the container properly when in storage.  Please store in a dry and cool place when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. Please use the chat function if you have questions or concerns. We hope that you can check our other listing of other cacti plants and products.
