Before he can do so, however, Gawain is set upon and the sword is taken by Morgause, who has also abducted Ingrid, Valiant’s granddaughter and heir to the throne of Camelot. It’s extremely faithful to the newspaper strip, to the extent of working with captioned illustrations: surely Foster couldn’t have asked for better successors than Charles Vess, Elaine Lee and John Ridgway. There’s a darker tone prevalent in this story, though, and the glory of battle is subsumed by its effects. Vess plots well enough to allow for plenty of diversions to interrupt the main quest, acknowledging the passage of time, and Ridgway’s art is sumptuous.
