Product Description

Eye shadow (or eyeshadow) is a cosmetic applied primarily to the eyelids to make the wearer's eyes stand out or look more attractive. Eye shadow can also be applied under eyes or to brow bones. There’s more to eye shadow than a bit of dress-up. Other answers here so far are about accentuation and sex appeal. I don’t disagree, but from an evolutionary standpoint consider this: Humans are the only primate – only animal – with a distinct smaller iris and exposed white sclera (the whites of your eyes); When someone sees your eyes move to look at something they know to also look where you are looking; eye contact in general is a strong human connector, with it’s own field of study: Oculesics; Looking into the eyes of a loved one produces oxytocin, the ‘love’ hormone; Dogs pay attention to human eyes and studies have shown that they get a hit of oxytocin when they stare at their human’s eyes; The eyes have a deep and rich cross-cultural mythos. The cooperative eye hypothesis says human eyes developed this way to facilitate non-verbal communication, the white sclera helping emphasize subtle movements of the darker iris and pupil. One study of head versus eye movement compared apes to human babies; apes would only follow the experimenters gaze when their entire head moved, whereas babies would only follow the eyes. Eye contact, gaze-following and other nuanced eye awareness seems to be hard-wired, high function behaviour in humans, linking eye movement to meaning. The selective pressure is that those who don’t respond to eyes of others either don’t do as well in the group socially, missing important cues, and those who are responsive do well. Both culling and reinforcement mechanisms at play. The adaptation response over time to this behaviour is a preference for a more ‘readable’ eye, the distinctive human eye, which has become so important functionally, culturally, intellectually and intimately. So, people adding eyeliner to accentuate their eyes are calling attention to a most important part of the face. It’s not darker eyes they’re trying for, it’s providing more contrast to better permit the whites to show off the iris, so they might be noticed…be more attractive, be included in the group, remove doubt of mutual interest.
