AIR DRY CLAY 101 WHAT IS FLYNNTASTIC AIR DRY CLAY? -Type of clay: cold porcelain -Non-toxic, safe for kids at least 5 years of age -cures by drying at least 6 hours per (1/4 inch thickness) in room temperature -no baking necessary PREPARING -Always start with clean hands. Wash with soap and water or with wet wipes. Clean all tools to be used as well. -You may use water based lotions or baby oil on your hands and tools to prevent sticking. SHAPING -plastic tools are best for this medium. You may use wooden and metal tools with mineral oils to lessen sticking ADHESIVE -The clay sticks to itself while soft. No glue is necessary -For attaching cured clay use regular white glue (E.G. Elmer's glue) or wood glue to stick the clay to each other. PAINTING -You may use acrylic paints or watercolor to paint on the clay or mix it to uncured clay to get a desired shade. CURING -cures by drying at least 6 hours per (1/4 inch thickness) in room temperature -You may use electric fans, heat guns or hair dryers to speed up drying time -Equal drying on all sides is necessary to avoid curving (especially with thin projects) -Thicker projects may need at least 25 hours or more to fully cure SEALING -Air dry clays are NOT waterproof. Sealing them with gloss is necessary to keep them splashproof. -Air dry clay is compatible with most gloss such as Acrylic Lacquers (Spray paint), Nail polish, Acrylic emulsion, etc. -Only seal once project is completely cured STORING -Keep uncured clay in airtight containers. In cool dry place away from direct sunlight -Store projects in cool dry place away from direct sunlight -You may put dessicants such as silica gel if planning to store projects in closed containers. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: CRACKS -cracks show up on cured clay when fine lines on your uncured clay are present. You can avoid this by rubbing off fine lines and making sure the shapes are smooth during uncured state BLEEDING COLORS -prevent colors from bleeding by drying the lighter color (at least rubbery) before applying the darker color. RUST -Moisture from uncured clay may cause rusting to metal findings. -Use stainless steel or non-metal findings to prevent rusting -You may dip your metal findings in WD40 before using to prevent rusting
